Mainly I try to use a DSLR setup for the photos but depending on time I also use other options.

Regarding the actual staging of the pictures, these will often differ and as yet, I am unsure as what is the best options. Time, light, equipment options and availability all come into play in the choice of man made photography stage.
I am unsure of which camp to fall into regarding the natural and more interesting backgrounds or the simpler more informative school of thought. I seem to fall into several of these dependant on all of the aforementioned issues.
I have also been trying the "mini studio" stages and I am as yet, not finding anything that is "just so".
